Where is AI really transforming marketing?

The real transformation isn’t in efficiency; it’s in how consumers find information, weigh their options and decide which brands to trust.

In brief

  • AI’s real transformation of marketing isn’t in efficiency but in how consumers find information and make decisions.
  • According to Harvard Business Review, AI is transforming marketing on two fronts: consumer decision-making and the rules of brand visibility.
  • In the age of AI, brands’ new yardsticks are findability, trustworthiness and the power to be preferred.

Much of the debate about AI still revolves around efficiency. Faster content production, better optimisation, lower operational load. None of that is trivial. But in my view, that’s not where the real transformation lies. The real transformation lies in AI changing how consumers access information, how they evaluate options and why they trust brands.

For many years, marketing’s core question was fairly clear: how do we get the right message to the right person at the right time? Today a far more strategic question is being added: how do brands become visible, recommended and trusted in an AI-powered world?

This matters because AI is no longer just an efficiency tool. AI-powered interfaces, summarisation engines, recommendation systems and next-generation search experiences are becoming an increasingly critical part of the consumer decision journey. That changes the rules of the game for brands. The point is no longer just to be visible, but to become a meaningful, trusted and preferred option at the moment of decision.

I believe this change also redraws marketing’s boundaries. Media, content, search, commerce, data and experience design are no longer areas to be managed separately. They are all part of a larger whole that determines a brand’s place in the new decision ecosystem. So when we talk about marketing in the age of AI, focusing only on performance metrics is not enough. We also need to look at what kind of context the brand creates, what kind of trust architecture it builds and what kind of reason to choose it offers.

That is the strength of the Harvard Business Review article. It argues that AI is transforming marketing on two main fronts: the way consumers access information and make decisions is changing, and in parallel the rules of brand visibility are being rewritten. This is a hugely valuable observation, because it reminds us that what will set leading brands apart is not being the fastest to use AI. It will be building organisations that can position their brand correctly in this new ecosystem, back their visibility with trust and turn it into sustainable value.

In short, in the age of AI the point isn’t just generating more reach. The point is a brand’s ability to redefine how findable, trustworthy and preferred it is.
